BECKLEY -- After scoring a goal to give his team a 3-0 lead and seemingly put the game away with 12 minutes remaining, Huntington St. Joseph senior Brier Wagner took his shirt off and was assessed a red card on Friday.
It was worth it for Wagner and the Irish as St. Joe claimed the WVSSAC Class AA/A boys soccer state tournament title with a 4-0 shutout victory over Wheeling Central on Friday morning at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex.
“It was well worth it,” Irish coach Nick Turner said. “What a way to end your high school career. He’s one of the best players in St. Joe's history. It is so fitting and huge for him to end it by winning a state championship.”
