With the government shutdown threatening to disrupt federal food assistance programs, food banks across the country are scrambling to help people in need.
Food Bank for the Heartland, an Omaha-based food bank that serves Nebraska and western Iowa, is "preparing for an unprecedented surge in the need for food assistance," the organization's website says.
The story is similar at food banks across the country, with more people expected to come through the doors as the shutdown drags on, USA TODAY reported.
