WASHINGTON —

Airlines across the United States are canceling hundreds of flights after the Federal Aviation Administration ordered unprecedented air traffic reductions to relieve pressure on air traffic controllers working without pay during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said, "So if the government opens on day one, will I see an immediate response from controllers? No, the union is telling me it's going to take time to get them all back in."

The FAA said the reductions impacting all commercial airlines are starting at 4% of flights at the busiest airports and will ramp up to 10% a week from Friday.

The flight cancellations are affecting 40 airports from Alaska to Miami, with airlines focusing the cuts on smaller regional fligh
