Washington ― Michigan U.S. Sen. Gary Peters on the Senate floor Friday blocked a Republican-led bill that would have paid federal employees and military members for the duration of the record-setting government shutdown, citing concerns that it gave too much leeway to the Trump administration to decide which workers get paid.
"There's too much wiggle room for the administration to basically pick and choose which federal employees are paid and and when," said Peters, a Bloomfield Township Democrat and member of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
"And I'm also deeply concerned that this would allow the administration to to actually transfer this money to other purposes that are unintended by Congress, which, unfortunately, we have seen happen repeatedly in this administration. I believe
