FITCHBURG, Wis. (WKOW) – Authorities in Fitchburg continue to investigate a fire from Thursday night on Fish Hatchery Road .

While the fire was small and contained, it resulted in the death of an adult man.

Fitchburg Fire Chief Scott Sarver described the fire as "an unimpressive fire -- meaning small and easily contained and pretty limited when our crew showed up," said Sarver.

Despite the fire's size, Sarver emphasized its deadly potential.

"It's very common when people think about structure fires, they think about death being caused by the fire itself," said Sarver. "Oftentimes, the death is caused by smoke inhalation. So even in small fires, they can produce a lot of smoke with very poisonous products of combustion or smoke."
