CHALLIS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — A man has entered an Alford plea agreement after Custer County deputies said he shot and killed a man before dismembering his body with a chainsaw.

Alan Bruce, 70, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and destruction of evidence after being accussed of killing Patrick Shelton, 47, back in May 2025, according to plea documents. He initially faced charges of first-degree murder, destruction of evidence, failure to notify a death and unlawful possession of a firearm.

A Custer County Sheriff’s Office affidavit stated that they began searching for Shelton after he was declared missing on May 10. Law enforcement eventually found his red pickup truck abandoned in the Big Hill area near U.S. Forest Service Road 256.
