Supreme Court has highlighted the need for fundamental reforms in land registration and ownership structures. The court noted that the current system, based on laws from the British era, has led to confusion, inefficiency, and large-scale litigation.

A bench comprising Justices P.S. Narasimha and Joymalya Bagchi suggested that to address these issues, the government could consider using technologies like blockchain. The court also asked the Law Commission to conduct a detailed study on the matter. The Commission has been directed to consult with the central and state governments, experts, and other stakeholders before submitting its report.
