NEW ORLEANS — As , New Orleans neighbors are stepping up to make sure families don’t go hungry.
At Perk Coffee and Community on North Rampart Street, boxes of canned goods, snacks, formula, and diapers stacked up throughout the day Friday for a one-day food drive aimed at helping families affected by SNAP delays and the ongoing federal government shutdown.
Organizer Kayleigh Gies said the idea started small — but quickly turned into something much bigger.
“We had a few people earlier — they said they waited in the food pantry lines, and they were really long and ran out,” Gies said. “So we’ve been very lucky that this is our fourth set of donations that have come in.”
The Perk Coffee drive was the second major food giveaway in the city Friday. Earlier in the day, Rock of Ages Baptist C
