Bernalillo County residents have received their property tax bills as of Nov. 1, and they have options to protest if they disagree with the assessments.
Each year, local municipalities, including counties and school districts, submit their budgets, which are partially funded by property taxes.
In Bernalillo County, property taxes for homeowners are capped at a 3% increase per year unless there are changes such as a new home purchase, added square footage, or a change in ownership.
Homeowners receive a notice of their home's valuation on April 1 each year. If they disagree with the valuation, they have 30 days to protest without any cost.
The county assesses over 285,000 properties annually, including homes and businesses.
