EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - No. 1 Michigan State hockey beat No. 3 Penn State 2-1 in overtime at Munn Arena on Friday night.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the first period on a goal from Anthony Romani off assists from Eric Nilson and Colin Ralph. Gavin McKenna scored for Penn State to tie the game at 1-1 in the second period.

Neither team scored in the third period, and the game headed to overtime tied 1-1 until Tiernan Shoudy scored the game-winner with 2:39 remaining in overtime off an assist from Tommi Männistö.

Both teams were unable to capitalize with a man advantage, with Penn State going 0-4 and Michigan State going 0-2 on power plays.

MSU starts conference play 1-0-0, while Penn State falls to 2-0-1 in the Big Ten.
