OXLEY'S top cop says the death of a baby girl who was hit by a train on Friday night is nothing short of "an absolute tragedy" and a "terrible accident".
Oxley Police Superintendent Dave Cooper told the Leader the force "was wrapping their arms" around the local family, the Baan Baa community, and the emergency services who did everything they could to try and save the one-year-old after she was struck by the train.
The girl - who was just shy of her second birthday - suffered severe injuries when she was clipped by the freight train as it rattled through Baan Baa, between Boggabri and Narrabri, just before 8 o'clock on Friday, November 7.
Despite the best efforts of emergency services, she succumbed to her injuries and died in hospital on Friday night.
