Residents across the city were woken Saturday morning to intense thunderstorms, a lightning strike from which is suspected to be the cause of at least one of two fires burning in the region throughout the day.

By Saturday evening, a fire believed to have been sparked by lightning had burned some 73 hectares of mangrove in the Hunter Wetlands.
NSW Rural Fire Service told the Newcastle Herald there was no immediate threat to property, and said the situation was being handled by the state's National Parks service, but urged residents to be vigilant to the condition
