A devastating explosion aboard a cargo ship in Malaysia has claimed the lives of three individuals, including a prominent British scientist. Darren Holling, 49, a safety chief from Durham, was conducting an investigation into a fire when the blast occurred on the MSC Kyparissia on Friday. Holling entered the hold of the vessel while unloading operations were underway. The explosion erupted unexpectedly, engulfing the area in flames and smoke. Tragically, Holling was caught in the inferno. Alongside Holling, two other victims were identified: Diaday Jason Hernia, 39, an engineer from the Philippines, and Sugumaran Kolanthai, 59, a safety inspector from Malaysia. Both also lost their lives in the horrific incident. In addition to the fatalities, two crew members and one inspector sustained injuries and were promptly transported to the nearest hospital from the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, located in the Johor Bahru district of Johor province. The incident has raised concerns regarding safety protocols on cargo ships, as investigations are likely to follow to determine the cause of the explosion and the circumstances surrounding the fire that preceded it.
