Two people from Elizabeth, including an 8-year-old girl were killed in a crash on Route 295 in Burling County on the evening of Sunday, April 6.
At 10:17 p.m., a Hyundai Santa Fe and Hyundai Tucson were traveling northbound on Route 295 in Florence, Jeffrey Lebron, a spokesman for the New Jersey Police said. The Santa Fe struck a guardrail, re-entered the roadway and collided with the Tucson, Lebron said. The impact caused both vehicles to run off the road and strike several trees, Lebron said.
Sharfu Uddin, 36, and the driver of the Tucson and an 8-year-old girl were killed in the crash, Lebron said. A passenger in the Tucson, a 26-year-old Elizabeth woman, and the driver of the Santa Fe, a 29-year-old woman from Miami, sustained serious injuries and were transported to an area hospital, Lebron said.
Those who knew Uddin identified the girl as his daughter. Condolences poured in on Facebook.
The crash remains under investigation, Lebron said.
