Rob Edwards will not take charge of Middlesbrough for Saturday’s clash with Birmingham City, as club officials made the decision to stand him down from his duties for the game amid doubt over his future at the club.

At this stage, it’s not known who will take charge, with the club expected to release a statement imminently offering more clarity. The decision over Edwards follows extensive talks between the head coach and club officials on Friday as Wolves made an official approach to speak to him on Thursday.

As well as not taking the game against Birmingham, Edwards did not take training on Friday morning and his usual pre-match press conference was cancelled. Instead, the 42-year-old was meeting with senior club officials, including owner Steve Gibson , as a resolution to the issue
