The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are making progress in resolving the Asia Cup trophy dispute. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed this development after a meeting with PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi during an ICC gathering in Dubai. The issue arose when India, after winning the T20 Asia Cup final against Pakistan on September 28, refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi due to his perceived anti-India stance.
The trophy has remained at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) headquarters in Dubai, with staff instructed not to move it without Naqvi's permission. Naqvi, who is also the ACC chairperson, insisted that the Indian team must accept the trophy directly from him.
Saikia described the recent meeting as a positive step, stating, "It was really good to start the process of negotiation. Both sides cordially participated in the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the ICC board meet." He assured that both boards are committed to exploring various options to resolve the issue amicably.
The discussions were facilitated by ICC officials, although Saikia did not disclose their names. He emphasized that there is no need for a formal dispute resolution committee at this stage, as both sides are keen to find a solution quickly.
The tensions surrounding the Asia Cup were evident, with the Indian team maintaining a no-handshake policy with Pakistan players due to the ongoing political climate. Saikia expressed hope that the trophy issue would be resolved soon, allowing for an appropriate presentation. This situation highlights the complex relationship between the two cricketing nations, where sports and politics often intersect.
