UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner Kelly Clements called for "increased support" from the international community as refugees continue to flee Sudan's Darfur region.

She was in Farchana, Chad on Thursday meeting with those who left el-Fasher, a city that Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had seized from the military before reportedly going on a deadly rampage.

As refugees stream into Chad, Clements said the nation needed "continued support" to assist those fleeing the violence.

They "need everything from a safe place to be, to shelter, to clean water, to an ability to be able to restart their lives," she said.

The war between the RSF and the Sudanese military began in April 2023.

More than 40,000 people have been killed, according to U.N. figures, but aid groups say the true death toll could be many times higher.
