The Chicago Bears are 5-3 so far this season, and some of their success has been predicated on having one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL. The Bears enter this week averaging the second-most rushing yards per game in the NFL, with 144.4 yards per outing. The Bears have been tough to stop, tossing a two-headed attack at opponents behind sixth-year veteran D'Andre Swift, who is averaging 66.3 yards per game, and rookie Kyle Monongai, who is averaging 45.1 yards per contest.
Monongai has had a few strong games, but gained a large chunk of his yardage on the season last week while relieving Swift, who missed the games due to undisclosed reasons. Monongai exploded for 176 yards on 26 carries in a 47-42 win over the Bengals in his counterpart's absence. But Swift is no stranger to big games either, and has recorded multiple 100-yard rushing performances this season – racking up 108 yards against the Commanders, and 124 yards against the Saints.
This week, the Bears' head coach gave some insight into his strategy for determining who gets carries, when they get them, and how many they get. And it could offer a hint at what the Bears' approach will be this weekend against the Giants, with Monongai coming off a huge performance and Swift listed as questionable.
"I believe in a guy having the hot hand. One guy, if he’s feeling it and giving us a spark, we might lean on that a little bit longer," Johnson said.
