Last week, as Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani created history by winning the New York mayoral elections, it gave hope to another South Asian Democrat eyeing a milestone moment in US politics. For Indian-origin Saikat Chakrabarti, that hope received a filip after Nancy Pelosi announced her retirement, opening a door for him to secure the Democratic party's nomination for the San Francisco seat in the US Congress.

Like Mamdani, Saikat Chakrabarti, 39, is among the new wave of progressive leaders looking to shake up the long-entrenched ideals of the Democrats. After Mamdani's big win, Chakrabarti took to X to explain why his win was inspirational.
