It has been painful to observe the lengthy government shutdown. From losing food assistance to government employees going without paychecks to travelers missing their flights, these have been tough times.

The main reason for the shutdown is skyrocketing health insurance costs. Republicans have cruelly eliminated the subsidies to the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) for next year. Those Republicans include North Dakota Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer, North Dakota Rep. Julie Fedorchak and Minnesota Rep. Michelle Fischbach.

It all means health insurance premiums will more than double for tens of millions of Americans. That means many won’t be able to afford health insurance, and will have to go without it. That means more people will get sick for no good reason.
