On Language: 'Illegal immigrants' through language and history

As I write these columns, I try to stay in my appointed lane of language and books.

But that is becoming increasingly difficult because of the daily intersection of language and our politics, specifically in the noun phrase “illegal immigrants,” which appears with increasing frequency in the news these days.
