RALEIGH, N.C. (WSPA) - The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has paused plans to provide SNAP benefits during the ongoing government shutdown.
NCDHHS said on Saturday it acknowledged a Friday decision by the U.S. Supreme Court which temporarily blocked a lower court order for the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP payments during the shutdown.
The state began on Friday distributing partial payments to some SNAP recipients with plans to provide more over the weekend before the Supreme Court issued the pause.
According to NCDHHS, partial benefits were sent to more than half of the 586,000 households which rely on SNAP, though many saw their benefit amounts reduced.
The state said more than 190,000 households got $16 or less.
