As an organization dedicated to advancing the welfare of all animals in Nevada, we are disappointed that both Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and Jackie Rosen voted no on a resolution aimed at halting the mass killing of barred owls in the Pacific Northwest. This vote sends the wrong message not just to wildlife policy advocates in Nevada, but to all citizens who expect elected officials to uphold sound science, ethical wildlife practices and fiscal responsibility.
A “no” vote in this case supports a sweeping program that could authorize the killing of up to 450,000 barred owls over three decades, despite serious warnings from conservation scientists that the approach lacks evidence of success and may drain taxpayer resources.
