Artificial intelligence is in the news a lot lately, and we’re beginning to hear more about data centers, buildings that hold the massive computing capacity that allow for increased use of AI and other technology.

Data centers have been around in Michigan for a few years, but the state’s 60 facilities are relatively small compared to what’s being proposed recently across the Midwest. Nationwide, there are 5,400 data centers, according to tech advisory firm C&C Technology Group.

The issue became more local this week when Deep Green, a United Kingdom-based firm, proposed a $120 million, 25,000-square-foot data center on Kalamazoo Street, between Cedar and Larch streets, adjacent to the Lansing Board of Water & Light’s John F. Dye Water Conditioning Plant .
