Cedric Coward registered another 20-point outing on Friday, helping the Memphis Grizzlies snap a four-game losing streak with a victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Cup.
Coward tied a team high with 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the 118-104 win at FedExForum. He finished by shooting 7-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, in 28 minutes off the bench as the Grizzlies improved to 4-6.
The 11th pick is now one of four rookies with multiple 20-point performances this season (2), joining Kon Knueppel, VJ Edgecombe and Cooper Flagg. He, along with Santi Aldama (16 points) and Cam Spencer (12 points), helped the Grizzlies combine for 49 points in bench scoring.
"I think this win brought us back to who we were," Coward said, via Grind City Media. "Not saying we lost it, but at the same time, the last couple of games, we went on a little bit of a losing streak. But it is OK because we learned so much through those games that we were able to apply what we learned in practice yesterday and apply that practice to today's game, which is great. Everybody bought in tremendously to what we needed to do."
Coward is averaging 15 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and one steal on 43.6% shooting from 3-point range in 10 games with the Grizzlies. He is third in rookie scoring and ranks 23rd among all players in true-shooting percentage (70.1).
The 22-year-old has emerged as a key player for coach Tuomas Iisalo, ranking third on the team in scoring off the bench after scoring in double figures eight times. In fact, Coward is third in the league in reserve scoring with 150 total points, trailing Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Jerami Grant.
Coward is taking advantage of his role to begin the season with several players sidelined. The team has been impressed with his disposition and attitude in the early going and is eager to see how he can continue to impact games on the court.
