Following a spate of machete attacks, aggravated break-ins and stabbings across Melbourne, residents have raised questions about the most effective ways to tackle the crisis.
Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) figures show crime jumping 18.3 per cent in June 2025 compared with the same time last year.
In the 12 months ending June 2025, Victoria Police recorded 483,583 criminal incidents, the highest figure since the CSA’s first report two decades ago.
Swinburne University criminology lecturer Joel McGregor said while crime had recently been on the rise, “only specific types of crimes are going up” among a certain group of people.
