Earlier this week the federal government announced a new plan to give households access to free electricity in the middle of the day.

It's called Solar Sharer, and it's got Australians — including ACT residents — hoping it will help lower their power bills.

How does Solar Sharer work?

Solar Sharer is a federal government proposal to use up excess solar power that the solar panels across Australia generate in the middle of the day .

A lot of that power currently goes to waste because people aren't at home to use it, and there isn't enough battery storage yet to soak it up for later use.

Of course, if you already have solar panels, you can get power for free every day through the electricity your panels generate.
