DAVIS, Calif. —
With the federal government shutdown stretching on, communities across the country are stepping in to help neighbors eat. At UC Davis, a new emergency food distribution launched on campus Saturday, where the Yolo Food Bank delivered 10,000 pounds of groceries to support students facing disruptions to CalFresh benefits.
Volunteers formed assembly lines to divide the delivery into 400 packages—about 25 pounds each, intended specifically for UC Davis students. Organizers asked attendees to have student IDs ready and emphasized the site’s student focus.
For many, the help is coming at a critical moment.
“People are concerned, people are worried,” said Daniela Sandoval, a student who works with Aggie Compass and volunteered at the event.
