Verdon, a Métis veteran who briefly served in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Cold War, said many faced discrimination and had their identities improperly recorded despite volunteering and putting their lives on the line for Canada. Article content Article content

Speaking to a small crowd at the Remembrance Park in Manotick on Saturday, Verdon said many Métis people were inspired to enlist after hearing stories about prominent figures like Gabriel Dumont and Louis Riel.
