BOURNE, Mass. —

Despite the government shutdown and the rainy weather Saturday morning, hundreds of people still showed up to the Bourne National Cemetery to make sure they were a part of placing more than 70,000 American flags on each headstone for Veterans Day.

Flags for Vets is a tradition started by a Gold Star family.

“Every stone gets a flag, we don’t leave until every stone has one,” said Patricia Corsini, Secretary of Operations at Flags for Vets.

This year organizers had concerns whether the event would take place or not due to the government shutdown.

But hundreds showed up to pay their respects.

“We definitely wanted to be a part of it," said Allison Barnes, a Dennis resident. "My brother was killed in 1992 in a military plane crash. He is not buried here; we have a family
