The onset of colder temperatures signals the end of the growing season for vegetables. Soon we will have our first freeze. Some thrive outdoors in the winter, such as collards, cabbage, and turnips; however, many others do not tolerate the temperatures, including tomatoes and peppers. Heated greenhouses are the ideal way to extend the vegetable growing season during the cold months; however, they are expensive and take up a lot of space.
