NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WFSB) - Dozens of volunteers spent Veterans Day weekend providing free home repairs for a 72-year-old Air Force veteran who served during the Vietnam War era.

Mark Chesanek received help from House of Heroes, a non-profit organization that assists veterans who want to stay in their homes. Volunteers worked on landscaping and repairing a ramp that makes it easier for Chesanek to get in and out of his house.

“I’m choked up, to be honest. I’d like to break out in tears but that would be very embarrassing,” Chesanek said.

Chesanek started serving in 1972 after receiving a low draft number during the Vietnam War.
