Detroit News readers likely think they know the story of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, the ore carrier that sank in Lake Superior 50 years ago this month and was immortalized by Gordon Lightfoot's hit ballad "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

Michigan author John U. Bacon would bet otherwise. Bacon grew up in Michigan and thought he knew the story, too, until he started researching the shipwreck for his new book, "The Gales of November: The Untold Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald."
