Cairo, Nov 9 (UNI/SPUTNIK) Syria’s Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa has arrived in the United States on an official visit, the Syrian news agency SANA reports.

The Syrian leader’s visit to Washington will be the first since the country gained independence in 1946.

Earlier, the United States lifted sanctions against al-Sharaa ahead of his visit to Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump. The US Treasury website reports that the head of the Syrian Interior Ministry, Anas Khattab, has also been removed from the US sanctions list.

On Thursday, the UN Security Council voted to lift sanctions against the Syrian president: 14 members of the Security Council, including Russia, voted in favor of the corresponding resolution. No one voted against it, China abstained.
