There will be a debate over the No. 2 spot in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll after Indiana pulled out a narrow win against Penn State and Texas A&M beat Missouri 38-17 to pull down a third road victory against a Power Four opponent then ranked in the Top 25.
That might give the Aggies enough ammunition to make up the 46-point gap separating them from Indiana in last week’s poll. However, moving A&M up one spot would require that voters ignore the Hoosiers’ impressive wins against Illinois, Iowa and Oregon, not to mention how they’ve defeated every opponent but the Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions by a double-digit margin.
Saturday notwithstanding, Indiana has been the more dominant team. A&M also struggled in two games against the weakest teams in the SEC, beating Auburn 16-10 and Arkansas 45-42. Even if voters give the Aggies an edge in strength of schedule, that advantage may be negated by the Hoosiers’ nearly flawless dismantling of most opponents in the Big Ten.
This comparison will define the top 10 of this week’s Coaches Poll, which will have one new member after Texas Tech beat previously unbeaten Brigham Young:
1. Ohio State (9-0)
The Buckeyes breezed past Purdue 34-10 in their penultimate Big Ten road trip and now come home for UCLA and Rutgers before heading away from home against Michigan to end November. While that rivalry showdown could determine who takes on Indiana in the Big Ten championship game, look for Ohio State to take care of business in the Horseshoe to secure at minimum an at-large playoff bid before taking on the Wolverines.
2. Indiana (10-0)
It’s all downhill from here for the unbeaten Hoosiers, who escaped Penn State in Happy Valley and close November with Wisconsin and Purdue. At this point, it would take something shocking – something more shocking than this long-suffering program being No. 2 in the Coaches Poll, even – for Indiana not to make the playoff.
3. Texas A&M (9-0)
The Aggies continue to roll toward an unbeaten regular season. A strong second half defensively against LSU was carried over to Missouri, which managed just 284 yards of offense in freshman quarterback Matt Zollers’ starting debut.
4. Alabama (8-1)
Alabama beat LSU 20-9 behind 277 passing yards from Ty Simpson, who had to the heavy lifting with the running game going for a season-low 56 yards. That’s two games in a row the Tide have failed to crack even 75 rushing yards this year and three times overall.
5. Georgia (9-1)
The Bulldogs ended any thought of a Mississippi State upset with a touchdown pass late in the second quarter to take a 24-7 lead into the break. The eventual 41-21 win was the 900th in program history, making Georgia the ninth Bowl Subdivision program to reach that mark.
6. Oregon (8-1)
Not the prettiest win, but mission accomplished: Oregon handed the playoff selection committee a ranked win on the road, nailing a field goal with seconds left to beat Iowa 18-16. The Ducks controlled the game mostly throughout and were much better at the line of scrimmage, but a few mistakes and Iowa’s typical steadiness required more late heroics from Dante Moore.
7. Mississippi (9-1)
The Rebels crushed The Citadel and can now steer toward SEC games against Florida and Mississippi State that will determine where they land in the final playoff rankings. The game to keep an eye on is the Egg Bowl, as always. Some voters may move Texas Tech ahead after its defeat of BYU, but the Red Raiders have too much distance to overcome.
8. Texas Tech (9-1)
Beating what was the only unbeaten team in the conference and doing it convincingly, by 22 points, firmly establishes what most people believed already: Tech is far and away the best team in the Big 12, and the only way the Red Raiders are going to lose is if they beat themselves.
9. Notre Dame (7-2)
Notre Dame will inch up one spot after having no issues beating Navy 49-10. One way to illustrate how Marcus Freeman has increased the quality of this roster is by looking at how the Irish have obliterated Army and Navy the past three seasons.
10. Oklahoma (7-2)
BYU lost and Virginia lost, so here comes Oklahoma. Or will voters reconsider and leapfrog Texas ahead of the Sooners because of October’s 23-6 win? Even if the Longhorns should be ahead, look for the Sooners to stay in front and make a two-spot climb.
