Michigan wants to position itself, and its workers, for an economic future that leans heavily into emerging technologies. At the same time, the state has bold environmental goals, and the two paths may clash.

The state, caught up in a nationwide battle to grow its population and spark a competitive economy, wants to attract jobs in the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence. A plan released by the state’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity earlier this year called for the creation of 130,000 jobs in AI-related sectors. It’s also seeking to attract the data centers needed to power AI, recently scoring a development described by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as "the largest economic project in Michigan history."
