To mark the Red Wings celebrating their 100th anniversary this week, The Detroit News is counting down the top 100 players in franchise history and selecting the top 10 teams.
The lists were compiled by Red Wings beat reporter Ted Kulfan and assistant sports editor Mark Falkner of The Detroit News, and Red Wings statistician Greg Innis. The top 10 teams feature 10 of the 11 Stanley Cup winners in Detroit. The only team that didn’t make the list was the upstart 1937 Red Wings, the first U.S.-based team to win back-to-back titles. After a 25-14-9 regular season, Detroit went 6-4 in the playoffs without injured starting goalie Norm Smith and leading scorer Larry Aurie.
