Super Typhoon Fung-wong has wreaked havoc across the Philippines, resulting in two fatalities and forcing over a million residents to evacuate. The storm, which boasts sustained winds of 115mph and gusts reaching 143mph, made landfall on Sunday morning, primarily impacting the eastern Bicol region. The Philippine government has declared a state of emergency in response to the extensive damage caused by Fung-wong, locally known as Uwan. This follows the devastation from Typhoon Kalmaegi, which had already claimed at least 224 lives in central provinces earlier in the week. As the super typhoon approached, the Philippine meteorological service warned of a "high-risk of life-threatening and damaging storm surge" with peak heights exceeding 10ft. Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr highlighted the potential catastrophic impact of Fung-wong, stating that it could affect a vast area, including Cebu and metropolitan Manila. More than 1 million people have been evacuated from high-risk areas, particularly in Bicol, which is prone to cyclones and mudflows from the nearby Mayon volcano. Teodoro urged residents to heed evacuation orders, emphasising the dangers of remaining in affected areas. "We need to do this because when it’s already raining or the typhoon has hit and flooding has started, it’s hard to rescue people," he warned. The storm's wide rain and wind band, measuring approximately 994 miles, has already caused power outages in several eastern towns. Authorities have pre-emptively closed schools and government offices in anticipation of the storm's impact. Flight cancellations have also surged, with at least 325 domestic and 61 international flights grounded over the weekend. Additionally, more than 6,600 commuters and cargo workers have been stranded at various seaports due to the coast guard's prohibition on vessels entering rough seas. As Fung-wong continues its path, the Office of Civil Defence has indicated that over 30 million people could be exposed to the storm's hazards. The typhoon is expected to track north-westward, with landfall anticipated in Aurora or Isabela province later on Sunday or early Monday. Residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and follow official guidance as the super typhoon approaches, with the government mobilising resources to assist those in need.
