Former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue died Sunday morning, his family announced. He was 84 years old.

Tagliabue, who was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002, was the successor of Pete Rozelle as commissioner, holding the position for 17 years from 1989 to 2006 before being succeeded himself by Roger Goodell.

"He viewed every challenge and opportunity through the lens of what was best for the greater good, a principle he inherited from Pete Rozelle and passed on to me."
