Tim Davie has resigned as the director-general of the BBC after 20 years, following a significant controversy over a Panorama documentary that misrepresented a speech by US President Donald Trump. The resignation comes amid growing criticism regarding the BBC's editorial standards and alleged bias, particularly in its coverage of Trump and other political issues.
The controversy erupted after an internal memo revealed that the Panorama programme, titled "Trump: A Second Chance?", had edited Trump's January 6, 2021, speech in a misleading manner. The edits suggested that Trump encouraged his supporters to march to the Capitol and "fight like hell", which led to accusations of the BBC promoting a biased narrative. The documentary aired shortly before the US elections, intensifying scrutiny on the broadcaster.
Deborah Turness, the head of BBC News, also resigned, stating that the ongoing controversy was damaging to the BBC, an institution she deeply cares for. She acknowledged her responsibility, saying, "The buck stops with me."
Davie announced his resignation, stating, "There have been some mistakes made and as Director-General I have to take ultimate responsibility." He expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure and noted that the decision was his own. He will remain in his position for a few months to ensure a smooth transition for his successor.
The internal memo, authored by former BBC adviser Michael Prescott, highlighted several editorial failures and raised concerns about the BBC's coverage of various issues, including the Israel-Hamas conflict. The backlash from the leaked memo prompted the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee to seek answers from BBC chairman Samir Shah.
In his farewell remarks, Davie reflected on the challenges of managing the BBC during politically charged times, emphasizing the importance of the broadcaster's role in society. BBC Chairman Samir Shah praised Davie for his leadership, calling it a "sad day for the BBC" and acknowledging the pressures he faced in recent weeks.
