HONOLULU (Island News) -- The state has activated the Hawaii National Guard to assist with Hawaii Foodbank’s emergency distribution events during the government shutdown.

The Hawaii National Guard was placed on state active duty status by Adjutant General Stephen F. Logan on Friday morning, Nov. 7, following a request from Governor Josh Green and Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke. Guard members will help with distribution events the Hawaii Foodbank is having on Sunday, Nov. 9, at Leeward Community College (LCC) and on Thursday, Nov. 13, at Aloha Stadium.

Many furloughed federal employees and active-duty military households continue to face challenges feeding their families as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits were suspended for over a month.
