DULUTH — Carl Gawboy, Candace Simar, Erin Soderberg Downing and Patrick Stevens were named winners of the 2025 Northeastern Minnesota Book Awards in a ceremony held Sunday at the St. Louis County Depot.
Gawboy, of Two Harbors, won the nonfiction/memoir award for "Fur Trade Nation: An Ojibwe’s Graphic History." In a statement, judges wrote, "This was a very enjoyable book to read and learn from and was our unanimous choice for the award."
Cary J. Griffith took honorable mention in that category for "Gunflint Falling: Blowdown in the Boundary Waters."
The youth literature award went to Erin Soderberg Downing, a Minneapolis resident and author of "Just Keep Walking." (Authors residing anywhere are eligible for the awards, as long as their books concern Northeastern Minnesota.)
