The consequences of Alzheimer’s disease affect far more than just the person who has been diagnosed.
November is National Family Caregivers Month – a time dedicated to these volunteers, whether family or friend, who perform this labor of love, taking care of family members afflicted with this disease, the Alzheimer’s Association said in a press release.
In Utah, more than 38,000 residents are living with Alzheimer’s, and there are more than 115,000 volunteer caregivers.
St. George News spoke with one such caregiver in Iron County. Jodie Lecoque has been caring for her mom for two years and has spent about $200,000 on professional assistance, ranging from care facilities to dental work.
Lecoque explained that the emotional burden placed on caregivers is a tough pill to swallow.
