BAR HARBOR -- Organizers say the MDI Community WoodBank's first volunteer day was a success.
A handful of community members stopped by the WoodBank's headquarters on Route 3 in Bar Harbor on Saturday, November 9, to help handle splitting, chopping and stacking wood.
It's a project new for the community , but founder Andrew Flanagan says he's seen a need to help with heating neighbor's homes for quite some time. With the price of heating high, and many Mainers struggling to make ends meet, the wood bank hopes to keep those in need warm as winter nears.
"There's a lot of older folks here that are on fixed incomes, and with the way electricity's been, and oil's been, and now food and insurance are up and SNAP benefits are cut, I think everybody could use a little hand," said Flanagan. "
