Australians have been left in the dark about whether they will need to government identification to access social media, ahead of the upcoming social media age ban.
From December 10, the government will force social media companies to block children from using social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
The government has insisted that platforms will not be allowed to require government IDs to verify age and must instead use “reasonable alternatives”.
However, shadow communications minister Melissa McIntosh has warned that the public still has little clarity on the issue of IDs and personal data storage.
“We're hearing now that digital identification may need to be required,” Ms McIntosh told Sky News on Monday.
