Every November, Canadians pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. From the battlefields of Vimy Ridge to the deserts of Afghanistan, Canadians have fought and died for freedom, democracy, and peace. It is one of the few times each year when we are united as a nation, standing together in silence and sharing gratitude for sacrifices made so that we might live freely. Article content

That is why the creation of Indigenous Veterans Day, separate from Remembrance Day, should give us pause. It is not because Indigenous soldiers do not deserve recognition. Far from it. They do, and they have earned our eternal gratitude. But setting aside a separate day, distinct from November 11, sends a message that runs counter to the very idea of unity we claim to seek.
