Federal officials were investigating outbreaks of botulism linked to ByHeart infant formula, which has hospitalized 13 infants across 10 states, including one from Arizona, according to the CDC's website .

During interviews with caregivers, all reported feeding their infants ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula in the month before symptoms appeared, the CDC said.

Tests revealed the presence of Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that, when ingested, can colonize a baby's large intestine and produce toxins.

In response, ByHeart announced a voluntary recall of two batches of its ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula after being notified of the investigation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, according to a statement released by the company .
