TERM OF DISAGREEMENT
Re “5 charged after pro-Israel student event at TMU attacked by masked mob” (Jane Stevenson, Nov. 6): In criticizing the attack on a gathering of Jewish TMU students, the Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre unnecessarily linked it to antisemitism. It is possible to criticize Israeli policy or actions in relation to Gaza without being antisemitic. Although many of the attackers were doubtlessly antisemitic, it was sufficient to note that they were anti-Israel and engaged in violence. Attacking another group of students justifies discipline by the university regardless of whether the attack was motivated by antisemitism or anti-Israel beliefs. Condemning the existence of Israel is antisemitic. Disagreeing with its approach to the Gaza war is not necessarily so.
