India’s approach towards the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is to prescribe a set of best practices rather than put stringent regulations and stifle innovation, says the academician involved in drafting the recently released AI Governance Guidelines.

“In a country like India, there are still a lot of benefits that we can derive from AI; that is why we decided to come up with the AI Governance ‘Guidelines’ and not ‘Regulations,’ B Ravindran, Head, Wadhwani School of Data Science & AI, IIT Madras, and chairman of the Drafting Committee of the new AI Framework, told businessline in an exclusive chat. All levels of the Government, from the PM to the IT minister and Secretary, were all clear on having a ‘lighter regulatory approach,’ he said.
