Nicola Sturgeon responded to the drugs death crisis by launching a “national mission” nearly five years ago. ‌

Scotland had the highest rate of drug deaths in Europe and Sturgeon appeared to be taking the crisis seriously. She announced £250m of funding and vowed to make progress. ‌

The First Minister admitted months later that the Government had taken its eye off the ball on drug deaths. Five years on, the Record will be running a series of reports on the progress made and the verdict will not be positive for the Government. ‌

Despite a fall in fatalities, Scotland remains Europe’s drug death capital and there are few signs of success.

Ministers have come and gone with alarming regularity and there is a lack of focus within Government.
